Alien Baby

This afternoon we had our second trimester ultrasound. And let me just say what all new parents secretly think but feel bad about voicing -- an in-utero child looks an awful lot like an alien. It was awesome to watch the wee thing and pick out feet and hands and beating heart. But when they try to give you a good look at you kid's face...all I could think about was the skull in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

But it was still magic. Squishy flopped around in there, first facing back-out, then rolling over to give us a better profile shot. It's so weird to think that there's a whole little person growing in your stomach.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed by the ultrasound techs. Their ability to identify body parts in that crazy scrunched jumble of limbs, cords, fluids, and blobs is nothing short of miraculous. "Oh, that's the femur" he'd say or "now there's an arm blocking the heart." If you say so. And as for accidently spotting private parts when you don't want to? Forget it! The only body part I managed to identify was a hand when Squishy decided to wave to us for a minute. That was fun.
