Here's what I love about my closest friends. They're all a lot like me. When I called them with news about The Abscess, the response was invariably something like -- "Wow that's gross...tell me all about it!"
There is definitely a huge amount of morbid curiosity that goes into experiences like these. Over the last day and a half before the surgery, my breast was starting to drain itself from a quarter-sized oozy crater on the left side. Seriously nasty...and oddly compelling. Whenever the nurse would come in to change the dressing, she and I would admire it and watch it drain for a little -- exclaiming about how gross it was, but unable to look away. I even tried to take a picture with my camera phone.
I was unconscious for the surgery itself -- and grateful for it! -- but now that I'm on the other side, I have a strong desire to hear the play by play from the doctor. How do they get that gunk out? With a sponge? A spoon? A mini-vacuum cleaner? I want to see it! Sadly, I doubt there's video.
Oh well. I guess I'll just have to direct my "enthusiasm for nasty things" towards Ellie's ever-impressive diapers from now on. I *should* be going home tomorrow. Everyone keep your fingers crossed!!
