So yesterday, when the baby doc told me that I should give Ellie a bunch of Pedialite to help her stay hydrated, I was smiling and nodding when I should have been asking her -- "How in the name of purple petticoats am I supposed to get her to swallow the darn stuff??"
It's all well and good to say that the baby needs to drink fluids to stay healthy, but when she doesn't want them, it can be quite a challenge.
On the way home from the doc, I picked up a jug of cherry flavored magic electrolyte water. I cheerfully poured her a nice bottle of it, settled her on my lap, set it to her lips and...nothing. No dice. No sucking. No swallowing. Just a deeply reproachful gaze directed my way.
Hmmmm. Maybe it's the flavor.
Back to the store to pick up apple and unflavored magic water.
Nothing.
I tried to offer it to her in a sippy cup. Nope. On a baby spoon. Nope. I finally managed to get some down her throat by using a syringe, but now she sees that coming a mile away and her lips clamp down so hard it would take the jaws of life to get something past them.
She has managed to successfully take a couple small formula bottles without heaving, which is good, but it would sure be nice if she would cooperative and chug a couple dozen ounces of the Pedialite, too.
