Side Effects

I saw the warning, but somehow didn't fully appreciate the danger.

On the side of Ellie's amoxicilin, printed in neat black letters are the words: "May Cause Diarrhea."

The Incident happened at gate A-5 of Pittsburgh International Airport at 7:45 on Saturday morning, ten minutes before Ellie and I were due to board our flight to Chicago.

I heard it happen and rushed to the bathroom. I swear I had her in there and on the changing table within a minute and half...but it was too late. The explosion had poured past her diaper, soaked her onesie and adorable brown corduroy overalls and was running down her legs and up her back.

Thank god I had packed a back up outfit -- I don't always because she never has blowouts. I wiped her down as best I could in an airport bathroom, wrestled her into her clean outfit and then surveyed the soggy mess that was my favorite outfit of hers. What I did NOT have in the diaper bag was a plastic bag for nasty poopy baby clothes. I ended up wrapping them up in the travel changing pad cover. Ick.

Happily, there were no further explosions en route to Chicago. Since we arrived, she has puked on a couple outfits and had another poop disaster so I'm going to have to do laundry. She's in her last clean outfit. And here I thought I had over packed.

Jim and I weren't sure if we were going to be met by a naked granddaughter coming off the plane, so we brought one of Kate's baby blankets just in case. Thankfully, El was fully clothed.
